Gingivectomy, also known as pocket reduction or flap surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to remove bacteria and calculus from the roots of your teeth when you have periodontal disease.

Your mouth naturally contains various types of bacteria that produce acids, leading to gum inflammation and infection, which can result in periodontal disease. Gingivectomy works to eliminate these bacteria and reduce inflammation, helping to protect your gums and teeth.

A gingivectomy helps to:

  • Reduce bacterial spread
  • Prevent bone loss
  • Improve home care effectiveness

To begin the procedure, our dentist will administer a local or general anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Next, your gums will be gently pulled back from your teeth, and bacteria and calculus will be removed, typically through scaling and root planing. At the end of the procedure, an antimicrobial agent will be applied to kill any remaining bacteria and promote healing. Your gums will then be sutured back into place to prevent shifting.

After a gingivectomy, you may experience increased gum and tooth sensitivity. However, your periodontal pockets should be reduced, and you should notice an improvement in your gum and tooth health within a few weeks.
